Welcome to the website
for Disability and Industrial Society

A collaborative project which looks at industrial injuries and diseases in three British coalfields between 1780 and 1948.

One in five people in Britain are disabled. Their lives today are affected by what happened in the past and the Industrial Revolution played an important part in shaping these experiences.

The Disability and Industrial Society project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, explores the effects of industrialization for disabled people between 1780 and 1948, focusing on the coal industry.

Here you’ll find information about the project team, research activities and public events that are taking place. There are also resources relating to disability in the coal industry and links to relevant websites. Team members will report on their latest findings and activities in the project's blog. The website is updated regularly, so please visit frequently for the latest news and views.
